Why Organic Furniture?
For the same reasons that more and more people are choosing organic food and purified water. Organic Furniture does not contain harmful chemicals, which means you are not taking the chance that exposure to those chemicals can harm you or your family. Lead paint was once used by millions of families for a long period of time before it was recognized as toxic and banned. Why must we have harmful exposure to chemicals before they are banned? There is no good reason. It would be great if products that could potentially harm you or your children were not allowed to be sold, but the fact is that these chemicals are out there and there is only one way to avoid them: Go chemical-free.
All of the furniture from You Are My Sunshine is hand-crafted in the USA and made of solid wood, NO MDF (what is mdf?). All wood is harvested using certified sustainable forestry practices right here is the US. Choose between a natural tung oil finish, a natural bees-wax finish and unfinished. Water-based glue where necessary is the final component in our furniture which means you get a ZERO off-gassing, non-toxic, healthy alternative to MDF, Formaldehyde Resin and other Volatile Organic Compunds (VOC’s) found in almost all furniture today. This includes children’s furniture. It can be avoided, but you have to know what you are looking for.
There are furniture manufacturers out there who claim to be “eco friendly” but still use something called low-emissions MDF. These products still emit or off-gas chemicals that are bad for us! It’s like saying we care about you because we put only a small amount of poison in your food. What? If a company really cared about you or your child’s health, they would put NOTHING in their product that could potentially harm you or especially your baby. Any MDF is a great money saver for furniture manufacturers. It is much cheaper than solid wood and it is easy to cut, shape, mold and it is strong! Unfortunately, it off-gasses. It is full of chemicals you would never expose your family to if you knew they were there.
One such chemical used in standard furniture and furnishings is Formaldehyde. Furnishings treated with Formaldehyde give off gases that are toxic in large amounts. Because it is found in many furnishings, the overall amount in any single room (like your nursery) can become concentrated and create a toxic environment for young children, pets and adults. “Medium density fiberboard contains a higher resin-to-wood ratio than any other UF pressed wood product and is generally recognized as being the highest formaldehyde-emitting pressed wood product.” (US Environmental Protection Agency-READ MORE)
Because of the size of your little ones, chemicals and toxins are more concentrated in their bodies. Children and newborns spend a majority of their time sleeping or napping; therefore, they are especially vulnerable to toxins in their bedroom environment. Before you purchase any furniture (cribs, beds, etc.) for your babies or you, ask about the woods, glues and finishes used to construct them. It matters.
